Shipwreck beach is the most known in Zante, one of the most famous in Greece and one of the most photographed sights in the world. Why is that?
The story goes back in 1980 when a boat was trying to illegally smuggle cigarettes and alcohol in Greece. The Greek navy chased the boat through the Ionian sea and due to the stormy weather it ran aground on the coast to the north of the island where you can find it nowadays.
A creation of human and nature the Shipwreck lies in the middle of a breathtaking bay and is a spectacular sight that you have to see in order to believe it. The beach is only accessible by boats that you can find in Zante town or Porto Vromi, although it can be viewed from a platform between the villages of Volimes and Anafonitria.
If you follow the signs it will be easy to find it and enjoy the spectacular view that is offered. For the one that will take the boat trip don’t miss the chance to swim to the crystal waters of the white sandy beach, where the rusting hulk lies half-buried. The shipwreck is a must for everyone that will visit the island.
